MENNO VON BRUCKEN FOCK (NL) "The Italians "Mac" and Sbrizzi FaBIO together make up BIOnighT. This is their fifth album since 1999 and it took them a lot of trouble to get made despite a considerable investment in new gear. The cd is almost one hour long and divided up into seven tracks of flowing melodic music from the direction of 80's TD and JM Jarre. Although the sometimes droning sequencers and additional drum sounds - in the title track for example - betray a slightly more modern approach, there are plenty of moments where you can blissfully sink back in your chair and truly imagine that you are listening to a forgotten TD bootleg ("Meditation in Yosemite", "Magma" and "Crystal Mist"). The basis of the majority of the numbers is usually an uncomplicated sequence, that barely alters in tone or rhythm, whereby I occasionally get the feeling that things are a little monotonous. This particular criticism comes from someone who likes variation and thus does not apply to everyone! The fact that the perhaps over-simplified basis is generously compensated for with, amongst other things, the building-up of added riffs, a different-sounding background orchestration or a quiet little melody line makes "The Art of Friendship" an attractive record that will appeal to a large audience." GUTS OF DARKNESS (FRANCE) "After an excellent first opus in Egoheart, Bionight felled into a more esoteric style, closer to New Age. The Art of Friendship, 5th opus of the Italian duet, reinstalls Bionight on the backgrounds of Egoheart with a more romantic touch and a more furious rhythmic approach. First album of a trilogy, The Art of Friendship crosses the styles which go from heavy electronic music, melodious to prog rock flavor, with very rocky moments, with a weak zest of a Berlin School repressed in its gleaming bastions. Angelic, Visione opens on fine cosmic choirs which grind to a beautiful sequential movement with paces altered by sudden rhythms. A strange title, difficult to encircle which transcends the borders of a modern EM, with a distant Berlin School fragrance. The Art of Friendship starts softly. Some fine solitary arpeggios charming the cosmos, on beautiful orchestral arrangements. A ghostly organ bites this lullaby on a heavy sequential movement. The drum explodes and the synth weds the forms of a guitar to heavy and drawling riffs, enjoining a synthesized circle by a wild and very loud rock. Like some electronic Deep Purple. Meditation in Yosemity joined a little more the soils of EM. A beautiful intro where the chords are sparkling on a gamboling sequencer. Between the rhythm and the atmospheric, the movement remains ambiguous and preserves a fanciful beauty which evolves on a more insistent rhythm, without ever escaping from its daydreamer path. Complex and beautiful, it is one of the titlewhich get closer to Berlin School with some intonations between Schulze and TD. With a similar title, we have to expect that Magma warms the hut. Well it is the case. Heavy whirlwind sequence which swirls on a keyboard with nervous keys, Magma is of a disastrous heaviness, but always with this melodious approach which is so dear to our Italian accomplices. I like the cast iron of the magmatic energy which calms down under fine chords of a disillusioned harp and a dying synth. Heavy, splendid and powerful Magma demonstrates all the sound power of Bionight. Sorridimi is in the same vein, although less stormy and more heighten. Light, Apnea skips with crystalline chords bordered by a synth at once lyrical and méphistic. A cadence in waterfallwhich swirls as a real carousel in poetic prisms. Crystal Mist is just like his title. A crystal fog which evaporates slowly through many arpeggios to romantic harmonies. Beautiful, perfect to be seduce by the breaths of Morpheus. We close eyes and we are transport by a cosmic wave tinged with a nostalgia which moves old ashes. I like this return of Bionight in the magic circles of EM. Without being a brilliant album The Art of Friendship gathers all the elements of an ideal album to tempt ears towards a new musical art. De fins arpèges solitaires faisant la cour au cosmos, avec de beaux arrangements orchestraux. Une orgue fantomatique mord cette berceuse sur un lourd mouvement séquentiel. La batterie explose et le synthé épouse les formes d’une guitare aux riffs lourds et traînants, enjoignant un cercle synthétisé d’une lourdeur sauvage et très rock. Du Deep Purple électronique. Meditation in Yosemity rejoint un peu plus les terroirs d’une MÉ. Une belle intro où les accords scintillent sur un séquenceur gambadeur. Entre le rythme et l’atmosphérique, le mouvement reste ambiguë et conserve une beauté chimérique qui évolue sur un rythme plus insistant, sans jamais s’évader de son sentier rêvasseur. Complexe et beau, c’est un des titres qui se rapprochent le plus près d’une Berlin School aux intonations entre Schulze et TD. Avec un titre semblable, on doit s’attendre à ce que Magma chauffe la cabane. Eh bien c’est le cas. Lourd tourbillon séquencé qui tourbillonne sur un clavier aux accords nerveux, Magma est d’une lourdeur cataclysmique, mais conserve toujours cette approche mélodieuse qui est si chère à nos compères Italiens. J’aime bien la fonte de l’énergie magmatique qui se calme sous de fines notes d’une harpe désillusionnée et d’un synthé agonisant. Lourd, étourdissant et puissant Magma démontre toute la puissance sonore de Bionight. Sorridimi est dans la même veine, quoique moins tempétueux et plus exalté. Léger Apnea sautille avec des accords cristallins ceinturés d’un synthé à la fois lyrique et méphistique. Une cadence en cascade qui tourbillonne comme un véritable carrousel aux prismes poétiques. Crystal Mist est à l’image de son titre. Un brouillard de cristal qui s’évapore doucement au travers maints arpèges aux harmonies romanesques. Beau, parfait pour se laisser séduire par les souffles de Morphée. On ferme les yeux et on se laisse transporter par une vague cosmique teintée d’une nostalgie qui remue de vieilles cendres. J’aime bien ce retour de Bionight dans les cercles magiques de la MÉ.
